‘UP Rookie Spotlight’ is a series on the Lady Fighting Maroons’ newest recruits. You’ve seen them on court, now learn more about these iska-atletas off court.
Mary Mirgie Bautista is admittedly pressured with the new role she has with the UP Women’s Volleyball team. But unlike other athletes off high school, she’s taking everything in with a smile. “Pressured pero masaya,” is how she defines her experience so far.
An Open Spiker for De La Salle Lipa, the 18-year-old has already gotten acclimated to the college volleyball scene and she thanks the team for it. The support of her teammates has made the transition from juniors to seniors easier and a lot more fun.
“Kahit na pressured na ako sa loob, chini-cheer nila ako para mag-laro ng masaya kasama nila,” the former Palarong Pambansa champion and Shakey’s Regionals Season 12 MVP shares.
This Chris Hemsworth fan particularly also looks up to her Ate Ayel because of her dedication to the game and the team. She appreciates how she’s able to put the team first despite a busy schedule.
Aside from her fellow Lady Fighting Maroons, Mirgie also appreciates the bond she is building with the coaches. She always looks forward to learning from them — not only with on-court skills, but lessons she can bring off court as well.
“Gusto ko matutunan ang magandang pag-uugali. Di lang skills ang gusto ko, pati mga magagandang gawain na dapat kong matutunan at i-improve.”
Outside of volleyball, Mirgie enjoys ice cream, lechon, and the Brad Pitt movie, “Troy.”
With a reinforced UPWVT, this history-lover may soon be a part of UP volleyball’s storied history as another team that brought glory to university.
