The UP Lady Fighting Maroons booked a seat in the Top Four of the Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam 2018 after serving the De La Salle Dasmariñas its third straight loss.
Coming off a straight-set loss to the UST Lady Tigresses, UP came in hungry to end the eliminations on a high note with another W. And secure a win they did, scoring a three-straight set victory against the bottom dwelling La Salle.
The match didn’t start out the way UP hoped as the opponents kept it close, looking to score their first set win in the tournament. But the ladies didn’t allow DLD to bag the set with a 21-25 win.
The second set was a whole different story as the ladies of Diliman dominated. After La Salle scored a 5-0 run to come within 6 points, 12-18, the Lady Maroons went on a 7-0 spree of their own. Behind the impressive service of Andreanna Lagman and Lorie Bernardos’ spiking, UP never looked back. They ended the second, 12-25.
The third kanto was like a replay of the first, however, as the squad from Dasma came very close to extending the match.
Nicole Magsarile, who had a total of 8 points, scored consecutive attacks to start the third at 0-3. From then it became a tug-of-war as La Salle posted several short runs to be just a point behind, 22-13.
UP’s errors and struggles with reception almost cost them the set. The Maroons had a total of 33 unforced errors to La Salle’s 24.
Not letting up, senior Justine Dorog took over and broke the opponent’s run to eventually secure the victory, 22-25.
Caryl Sandoval led UP with 11. Jessma Ramos added 8, while Bernardo, Dorog and Marist Layug each had 6 points. Basilyn Delfin posted 13 for De La Salle.
With the win, UP sits at solo second with a 4-1 record. They secure a seat in the top four with the final rankings being decided after the next two game dates.
The Bronze and Gold medal matches will be on December 20, Thursday at the Flying V Arena.
