UP sweeps DLSU!
The Lady Maroons stunned three-time defending champions DLSU Lady Archers in a three-set sweep to win their second round duel this afternoon. UP has now won both face-offs against DLSU this season, going to 2-0.
It was like a replay of the first round duel many considered to be the best game of the season so far. Both teams took blows at each other in a close back-and-forth for the first set.
However, after the first technical timeout, UP went on a rampage, mounting run-after-run to lead by as much as 9 markers. The Maroons never looked back, easily securing the first, 25-16. The team led in attacks, 10-9, while DLSU had 10 errors.
The Archers found better footing in the second to lead early in the first. Heading to the second technical timeout, DLSU was up 4, 12-16.
Calling a timeout, Coach Godfrey Okumu reminded his team to “stay focused.” And stay focused they did.
The Maroons took advantage of the Taft-based squad’s 14 set errors to finally tie the match at 19-all and take the lead at 23-22. Jessma Ramos capped the comeback with a putback to end the second, 26-24.
Up 2-0, rookie Lorie Bernardo took over the third, scoring aces and attacks to help give her team a 3-point advantage, 10-7.
The Lady Maroons couldn’t shake off the Archers though as the Desiree Cheng-led team crawled back to lead, 13-14. But the determination of the squad was too much for Ramil De Jesus and her ladies to overcome. UP finally secured their second victory against DLSU in as many games, 25-19.
Tots Carlos led the team with 13 points, while Isa Molde added 11. Bernardo added 5 and Justine Dorog had 4.
Cheng led the Archers with 11 as Lourdes Clemente and Jolina Dela Cruz chipped in 6 each.
The win marks UP’s sweep of the defending champions for the season — a feat that hasn’t been done in years.
The win also puts the Maroons a step closer to securing a Final Four spot. They are currently tied with FEU at 5-3.
The UPWVT will face the Ateneo Lady Eagles on Saturday (March 30), 4pm at the MOA Arena.
