UAAP 81: UP asserts dominance against FEU, remains spotless

The UP Lady Fighting Maroons had another impressive outing against the FEU Lady Tamaraws, securing their second win in as many games in UAAP Season 81.

The Lady Maroons struggled to gain momentum at the start of the first. Heading to the FTT, FEU was up by 5. That’s when Tots Carlos happened. The captain scored back-to-back points, including three consecutive service aces to tie the scores.

It was a tight back-and-forth, but UP’s strong attacks and seven service aces proved costly for the Tamaraws as they drop the first, 25-18.

FEU took revenge in the second set and went on a scoring spree to lead by as much as 10 points. Efforts to stay in the game by Jessma Ramos and Justine Dorog helped the team inch closer, but the 13 error points were too much as they bowed out, 20-25.

Both teams came alive in the third set as they battled tooth-and-nail to get the upper hand in the match. Tied at one set each, the squads took turns with their smashes and kills in the tightest set of the game.

Deadlocked at 20-all, Isa Molde, who scored 5 points in the set, took over to secure the 25-22 win.

With the W within arm’s reach, UPWVT wasted no time in closing out the duel against their PVL Finals opponents. With Marian Buitre, Aie Gannaban, and Ramos at the helm, the Lady Maroons secured their second UAAP 81 win and again asserted their new-found dominance against the Lady Tamaraws.

Carlos led the Maroons with 15 points and 12 attacks. Dorog added 12, while Molde had 11. Ramos also chipped in 8 points to help the team remain spotless in the tournament.

The UP Lady Fighting Maroons will face the UST Golden Tigresses on Sunday (Feb.24), 2pm at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
