The UP Women’s Volleyball Team lost more than the game against the Ateneo Lady Blue Eagles this afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Arena. The Lady Fighting Maroons also lost co-captain Isa Molde to a knee injury.
Round two of the Battle of Katipunan was nothing short of a war as the two universities took shots at each other in a tight first set.
Neither of the teams had the clear edge throughout much of the canto. It was only in the tail-end of the close give-and-take when the Lady Eagles summoned enough strength to end the first, 23-25.
The second was a nightmare for the Lady Maroons. Early in the set, Molde awkwardly fell on teammate Mirgie Bautista after an attack and had to be stretchered out of the court. From then, the team went on a spiral, trailing behind Ateneo, 1-10.
An obviously unnerved UP team fought hard for a comeback, led by Caryl Sandoval and Marian Buitre. But the unfortunate incident, coupled with Ateneo’s big lead were too much to overcome as UP bowed out of the second, 16-25.
Ateneo led the set with 3 service aces, while UP had 10 errors.
Buitre, who had a total of 6 points, continued her strong play, as a revived Maroons entered the third. Together with Carlos and Ayel Estrañero, the seniors carried the Diliman squad to a very close duel against the 7-1 ADMU.
A strong outing from Justine Dorog also helped push her team to a two-point lead, 20-18. However, in the end, it was the Loyola squad who secured their eighth win with a 23-25 third set victory.
Carlos led UPWVT with 8 points, while Dorog and Ramos added a total of 11. Molde had 4 points in two sets. The severity of her injury has yet to be confirmed.
The loss puts UP in the fifth spot at 5-4, trailing behind the FEU Lady Tamaraws, DLSU Lady Archers and UST Golden Tigresses — all tied at 6-3.
The UP Lady Fighting Maroons will face the UE Lady Warriors on April 3 (Wednesday), 2pm at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
