Eya Laure and the UST Growling Tigresses were too much for the UP Lady Fighting Maroons to handle. The España-based squad toppled UP in four close sets in today’s Premier Volleyball League match.
It was the Nicole Magsarile show in the first set as the rookie showcased her overall prowess, scoring from all angles — from attacks to aces.
However, UST bounced back, imposing their will on the ladies in the following sets. UP tried to crawl back, narrowing the gap in set three to just three points. But Eya Laure and Milena Alessandrini found their footing to bag two consecutive sets.
UP rookie Lorie Bernardo caught fire early in the fourth, followed by Magsarile who took over to give UP breathing room mid set.
It was a close back-and-forth all throughout the fourth, knotting at 24-all. However, UST proved to be tougher, finally sealing the win with 26-24.
Magsarile had a breakout game with 12 points, joining Isa Molde with 13. Marian Buitre and Aieshalaine Gannaban had 7 a piece, while Lorie Lyn Bernardo added 5.
UST’s Laure led all scorers with 18 markers, while Christine Francisco had 16.
UPWVT falls to 1-1 and will face San Sebastian Lady Stags on Wednesday (Aug. 8), 4pm, at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
