PVL: UP dismantles San Beda to end PVL Elims

The UP Lady Fighting Maroons made easy work of the San Beda Lady Red Spikers at their Premier Volleyball League match today.

It seemed like UP would have a hard time shaking off the NCAA season 93 volleyball runners up in their afternoon face-off at the Filoil Flying V Arena. But UP did not let a slow start keep them from sweeping San Beda.

The first set started with both teams throwing blows at each other, keeping it very close  through the midway point at 18-all. A Marian Buitre smash changed things for UP, sparking something in the Lady Fighting Maroons as they went on a 7-1 run and ultimately bagging the set, 19-25.

The UPWVT never looked back. Even with SBU’s strong start in the second set, tying it 4-4, Coach Godfrey Okumu’s adjustments gave the ladies better footing throughout. The Diliman-based squad overran San Beda with a 6-1 run to eventually seal another set, 16-25.

The rest of the match had the same story as UP continued to dismantle the NCAA power squad. The Maroons started hot in the third, upping the opponents, 3-0. SBU had no answer to their fiery third set, led by Isa Molde who produced 19 points in the game.

UP kept the Lady Red Spikers under 10 points in the last set to take a three-straight set victory as they end the PVL eliminations.

Buitre had another impressive performance with 10 points. Maris Layug added 8, while Rosie Rosier had 7 points to give UP the victory.

For San Beda University, it was Maria Viray who scored most with 6 points.

The UP Women’s Volleyball Team end the elimination round with a 4-3 record, securing the fourth place.
